Five Days Before The Moonlight Masquerade Ball

Dex paced the stone floor of the dungeon beneath Xander’s family’s home. The dungeon hadn’t been used in decades. At least, not that Xander’s family knew of. Take right now, for example. They had no idea a vampire sat bound in chains of magic beneath the polished floors of their stately home.

The vampire, Azriel, had been here since the night before, when Xander and Olly had spotted him in the vicinity of the bridge where that magic-wielding vampire had revealed himself. They’d knocked Azriel out with magic—a feat that was probably only possible because he didn’t know it was coming—and brought him straight back here, far from the prying eyes of Dex’s parents and everyone else at Belmont Palace.

They’d given Azriel the night to sleep off the effects of the magic, but now that he was awake, it was time to get some useful information out of him. “Has it been long enough?” Dex asked.

“Still another minute,” Olly said, taking a look at his cell phone screen and continuing to tap one foot quietly against the floor.

“You’re very impatient,” Azriel commented, his eyes pinned on Dex. “You should try some relaxation techniques. Meditation, perhaps.”

Xander took a step closer to Azriel, muttering something about meditation and sticking things where the sun didn’t shine. If Dex wasn’t concerned with sparing his energy, he might have responded. But the truth spell he’d performed was a complicated one, and once it began working, it would tire both him and Azriel. Azriel more so, since he would be the one struggling to hide the truth as the magic of the spell pulled it out of him. But Dex would suffer too.

“I know who you are,” Azriel said to Dex, and that was enough to stop Dex mid-stride.

Don’t let him get to you, he reminded himself. He was supposed to be the one in control here, not this vampire. “I doubt it,” he replied.

“You may have gone to a great deal of trouble to hide your face from the public,” Azriel said, “but I do my research. I know what everyone in your family looks like, Prince Dex.”

Dex forced himself not to show his alarm. So what if this vampire knew who he was? It made sense, given the main goal of the Allegiant vampires. He should have expected it.

The alarm on Olly’s phone beeped shrilly, breaking the tense moment. A second later, Dex felt a tingle across his skin. Olly quickly turned the alarm off. “Okay, it should be working now.”

“Yes, I felt it activate,” Dex said. He stood in front of the chair Azriel was bound to and folded his arms. “What are the Allegiant vampires planning?”

Azriel pressed his lips together for a long moment before giving in to the spell. “They plan to kill the fae royal family and place Vincenzo Savoy, last remaining heir of House Savoy, original rulers of this country, on the throne.”

Dex sighed. “I know that already. I need to know specifics of when and how they’re planning to move against my family.
